Description
Classic homemade sloppy joe sandwiches loaded with savory beef, peppers, garlic, and rich tangy sauce served on toasted buns.
Ingredients
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium yellow onion, diced
1 large green bell pepper, diced
1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
1 tablespoon chili powder
5 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 cup water, plus more as needed
4 hamburger buns
Instructions
1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and bell pepper, then cook for about 5 minutes, stirring often, until softened.
2. Add the ground beef and increase the heat to medium-high. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes, breaking it apart as it browns, until fully cooked.
3. Stir in the salt, chili powder, and red pepper flakes. Reduce the heat to medium, add the garlic, and cook for about 2 minutes until fragrant.
4. Add the Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, ketchup, brown sugar, and water. Stir well, then let the mixture simmer gently until thick and saucy.
5. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed. Add a splash of water if the mixture gets too thick.
6. Lightly toast the hamburger buns in a skillet or on a griddle, cut side down, for 1 to 2 minutes. Spoon the beef mixture onto the buns and serve warm.
Notes
Toast the buns before serving for the best texture.
Add extra water if the filling becomes too thick while simmering.
Leftover filling stores well for several days in the refrigerator.
