Description
Crunchy air fryer tofu nuggets seasoned with smoky spices, tamari, and pickle brine for incredible flavor and texture.
Ingredients
1 (14-ounce) block extra-firm tofu
2 tablespoons dill pickle brine or caper brine
2 tablespoons tamari
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1/2 teaspoon cane sugar
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/2 to 1 teaspoon sea salt, to taste
Cooking oil spray
Ketchup or barbecue sauce, for serving
Instructions
1. Remove the tofu from its package and drain well. Place it between layers of paper towels or a clean kitchen towel. Set a heavy object on top and press for about 20 minutes to remove excess moisture.
2. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F.
3. Break the pressed tofu into bite-sized nugget pieces using your hands and place them in a large mixing bowl.
4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the pickle brine, tamari, olive oil, and sugar.
5. Pour the liquid mixture over the tofu and gently toss until coated.
6. Sprinkle the flour, garlic powder, smoked paprika, black pepper, and sea salt over the tofu. Toss again until the seasonings are evenly distributed.
7. Lightly spray a piece of parchment paper with cooking oil and place it in the air fryer basket. Arrange the tofu pieces in a single layer on top and lightly spray the tops with oil.
8. Air fry for 20 minutes, flipping the tofu halfway through cooking. For extra crispiness, cook for an additional 3 to 5 minutes, keeping a close eye on it.
9. Serve hot with ketchup or barbecue sauce for dipping.
Notes
Pressing the tofu thoroughly improves texture.
Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket.
Additional cooking time creates extra crunch.
