Description
Creamy layered potatoes baked with onions and cheddar sauce until golden and tender.
Ingredients
4 russet potatoes, peeled and sliced into 1/4-inch rounds
1 yellow onion, thinly sliced into rings
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups whole milk, at room temperature
1 1/2 cups shredded mild cheddar cheese
Salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 400°F and grease an 8×8-inch baking dish.
2. Layer potatoes and onion rings evenly in the dish.
3. Melt butter in saucepan over medium heat.
4. Whisk in flour and salt for 1 minute.
5. Gradually whisk in milk and cook until thickened.
6. Add cheese and stir until melted smooth.
7. Pour sauce over potatoes and cover with foil.
8. Bake 85 to 90 minutes until tender.
9. Broil uncovered a few minutes until golden.
10. Season with salt and pepper before serving.
Notes
Slice potatoes evenly for consistent baking.
Let rest 10 minutes before serving for cleaner portions.
