Baked Ziti with Ricotta Cheese

Description

A rich and comforting baked ziti layered with creamy ricotta, savory meat sauce, and melted mozzarella.


Ingredients

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 cup chopped onion

1 tablespoon minced garlic

2 pounds ground beef

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1 teaspoon black pepper

48 ounces tomato pasta sauce

3 teaspoons Italian seasoning

24 ounces ricotta cheese

2 large eggs

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

12 ounces ziti pasta

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese


Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

2. Heat olive oil and cook onion until softened.

3. Add garlic and cook until fragrant.

4. Brown ground beef with salt and pepper.

5. Stir in tomato sauce and seasoning, simmer.

6. Mix ricotta, eggs, nutmeg, seasoning, mozzarella, and Parmesan.

7. Cook pasta until tender and drain.

8. Layer sauce, pasta, meat, and ricotta mixture.

9. Repeat layers and cover.

10. Bake 40 minutes, uncover, add mozzarella, bake 10 more minutes.

11. Rest 10–15 minutes before serving.

Notes

Letting the dish rest helps it set properly.

Use whole milk ricotta for best texture.

Can be made ahead and refrigerated before baking.
