Description

A striking dish of spiced ground beef layered over smooth hummus, garnished with toasted pine nuts, mint leaves and served with warm pita bread. This savory spiced beef over creamy hummus recipe brings Middle Eastern flavour to your table.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound hummus

  • 1/4 cup toasted pine nuts

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef

  • 2 tablespoons za’atar

  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin

  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

  • 1 1/2 cups beef stock

  • Pita bread for serving

  • Optional toppings: fresh mint leaves, flaky salt, olive oil, extra pine nuts, extra za’atar

Instructions

  • Warm a large skillet over medium-high heat. Melt the butter with a small splash of oil, then add the ground beef.

  • Cook the beef, breaking it apart as it browns. Once it becomes crumbly, sprinkle in the za’atar, salt, cumin, and smoked paprika.

  • Stir well to coat the meat in the spices, letting everything toast for about 2 minutes.

  • Pour in the beef stock and lower the heat to medium-low. Simmer for about 10 minutes, or until most of the liquid cooks down and the mixture becomes saucy but not watery.

  • Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. Fold in the toasted pine nuts and remove from the heat.

  • Spread the hummus onto a serving dish and spoon the warm spiced beef mixture into the center. Add any optional toppings you like. Serve with pita bread and enjoy.
