Description

A rich and creamy homemade onion dip made with slow-caramelized onions, sour cream, and cream cheese. Perfect for parties, snacks, and gatherings.

Ingredients

3 medium yellow onions, very thinly sliced

2 tablespoons salted butter

2 teaspoons salt

2 teaspoons sugar

1/4 cup vegetable broth

12 ounces sour cream

8 ounces cream cheese, softened

1 clove garlic, finely grated (optional)

2 tablespoons fresh flat-leaf parsley, finely minced

1 tablespoon soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce (optional, to taste)

Instructions

1. Peel the onions and slice them very thinly so they cook evenly.

2. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sprinkle with the salt and sugar. Cook for about 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions begin to soften.

3. Pour in a small splash of vegetable broth and let it cook off while stirring.

4. Continue cooking the onions for another 20–30 minutes, adding a small splash of broth occasionally if the pan becomes dry. The onions should become deep golden brown.

5. Transfer the cooked onions to a cutting board and roughly chop them into small pieces.

6. In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and sour cream. Stir until smooth.

7. Add the chopped caramelized onions and minced parsley.

8. Taste the dip and add the grated garlic and soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce if desired. Mix well.

9. Serve the dip slightly warm or chilled with crackers, chips, or fresh vegetables.

Notes

Slice onions very thinly so they caramelize evenly.

Allow the onions enough time to cook slowly for the best flavor.

The dip can be made a day ahead and stored in the refrigerator.
